Charles “Charlie” E. Newman Jr., 81, of Belle Center, Ohio, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009, at Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He was born May 23, 1927, in Bellefontaine, a son of the late Charles E. and Eva Lou Engle Newman. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Newman.

On December 31, 1947, he married the former Barbara Carr in Belle Center and she survives, along with two sons, David (Bonnie) Newman of East Aurora, New York, and Duane (Lois) Newman of London, Ohio; a daughter, Diana (Sam) Henry of West Liberty, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Erin (Rob) Macey of Malden, Massachusetts, Sarah (Shaun) Todd of Newberry Port, Massachusetts, Megan (Kevin Stackman) Newman of Buffalo, New York, Kelly (C.J.) Ferraro of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Emily (Adam Jurich) Henry of Urbana, Ohio, and Blake and Blair Newman of London, Ohio; two brothers, Robert Newman of Tacoma, Washington, and John Joseph Newman of Bellefontaine; three sisters, Vivian Millisor of Russells Point, Ohio, and Ruth E. (Jim Krock) Plikerd and Garnet (Ronald) Roebuck, both of Belle Center; sister in law, Sherril Newman of Belle Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He worked for Kenosha Auto in Lima Teamsters Local 908 and retired in 1991 from the Logan County Auditor’s Office as an inspector for weights and measures.

A World War II U.S. Navy veteran who served on the U.S.S. Bennington, he was a lifetime member of the Belle Center United Methodist Church and the Willard Stout American Legion Post 266.

He was a past member of the Belle Center Kiwanis, Teamsters, Eastern Star and Bellefontaine Masonic Temple # 209. He was a Past Master of the Belle Center Masonic Temple # 347, and was a former Republican Central Committeeman and a former Richland Township trustee.

Charlie never knew a stranger and loved spending time with his grandchildren and relished the time he spent with his friends and the Grumpy Old Men’s Monthly breakfast club at the coffee shop in Belle Center.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, February 22, 2009, at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Belle Center, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 4 p.m.

Rev. Kevin Smith conducts a celebration of life service at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 23, 2009, at the Belle Center United Methodist Church. Burial is in Fairview Cemetery, Belle Center, with military services by the Logan County Honor Guard.
