Dorlean S. Guthrie, 90, of Bellefontaine, passed away Monday, January 23, 2023, at Green Hills Care Center. She went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, with her loving daughter Linda at her side.
Dorlean was born in Logan County, Ohio, on July 16, 1932, to the late Earl Irvin and Viola Elizabeth (Pugh) Stayrook. She married James E. Guthrie on September 3, 1955, in Richmond, Indiana, and he preceded her in death on July 5, 2000. Dorlean was also preceded in death by son James E. “Spanky” Guthrie, granddaughter Molly Maier, sisters Sarah Maxine Aler and Elizabeth Herring, and brothers Robert “Bob” Stayrook and Earl Stayrook, Jr.
Dorlean is survived by her daughter Linda (Scott) Bates of West Mansfield; 6 grandchildren: Justin Guthrie, Shandra (Michael) Kirk, Emily (Derrick) Pen’a, Holly (Nick) Mays, Brian (Chaya) Bates, and John (Jamie) Bates; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters: Christine Spain of Middleburg, Betty Hennessy, Shirley Ritter, Sharyl Jackson, and Phyllis Hunt, all of Bellefontaine; a sister-in-law Ruth Stayrook of Bellefontaine; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend Raymond Titus of Bellefontaine.
Dorlean was a factory worker at D.A.B. / Glacier Daido where she worked for many years and retired. She also was a bus driver for many years for Bellefontaine City Schools. Dorlean loved to watch her grandchildren play sports. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Bellefontaine and Florida, and enjoyed working the ticket gate at the county fair for Kiwanis. Dorlean was a member of Bellefontaine First Christian Church, where she was a Deaconess and member of the Pilot Sunday School class. Dorlean was also a member of Mary Rutan Hospital guild, loved watching the Ohio State Buckeyes, and was a former Municipal Clerk of Courts for Bellefontaine.
Dorlean loved her family and always strived to have everyone there at the Stayrook Family Dinners, where she was responsible for her famous graham cracker pudding recipe. Despite all efforts, no one’s has ever tasted as good as Grandma’s. Before his death, she and Jim enjoyed playing cards, traveling and spending as much time as possible in the bleachers of sporting events of their grandchildren. You could point her out in the stands as the lady often voicing her strong opinions to the referees. She continued to travel with her daughter Linda to ball games all over the state and country.
Pastor Bryan Meadows will officiate Dorlean’s funeral service on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at 1pm at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Bellefontaine, where friends may call 2 hours prior to the service from 11am to 1pm. Burial will follow in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
