Eugene W. Schmerge, 91, of Bellefontaine, passed away Sunday evening, July 14, 2024, at Mary Rutan Hospital – Emergency Department.
Gene was born on January 6, 1933, in Shelby County to the late Linus and Irene (Soder) Schmerge. He married Betty L. Wynegar on October 13, 1956, and she preceded him in death on April 4, 2024. He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Doris Vaubel and Charlene Gaier, and a brother Ronald Schmerge.
Gene is survived by a daughter Terri (Terry) Schneider of Bellefontaine; a son Tim (Rhonda) Schmerge of Lewistown; 3 grandchildren: Gina Schneider, James (Amanda) Schneider, and Hannah (Jesse) Brown; 2 great-grandchildren: Kennedy Schneider and Amelia Brown; 2 sisters: Donna (Ronald) Egbert of Botkins, and Mary Jane (Gary) Sollomann of Anna; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean War. A lifelong farmer, he also worked several years at RJR Sales and Beelman Construction. Gene was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed going to antique tractor shows.
Visitation for Gene will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 5-7pm at Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Bellefontaine. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 19 at 11am at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by members of the Logan County Honor Guard.
