Fred J. "Junior" Garland

Fred J. “Junior” Garland, 82, of Westerville, and formerly of Bellefontaine, passed away at 8:19 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville. He was born in Erwin, Tennessee on April 3, 1943, to the late Fred C. and Mary Lucille (Tucker) Garland.

On March 14, 1962, in Cumberland, Maryland he married Judy (Wise) Garland, and she survives.

Fred is also survived by his daughters, Gina Scarver and Laura (Robert Jr.) Hartley; grandchildren, Steven Scarver, Christopher Scarver, Brittany (Cameron) Kennedy, Jacob (Megan) Gifford, Cody Scherer, and Courtney Scherer; numerous great grandchildren; siblings, Barbara Wildermuth and Mary Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Lynn Garland Scherer, and siblings, Robert Garland, and Edna Downing.

Fred was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and worked on the railroad before retiring from CSX. He had a love for fishing, particularly in Canada. Fred was a huge fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and spent over 30 years working as an usher and security on the bench during Buckeye football games. Fred and Judy traveled extensively, visiting 47 states and going on cruises to the Caribbean Islands. Fred will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

Pastor Bryan Meadows will officiate a funeral service at 12 Noon on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main Street, Bellefontaine. Visitation will be two hours prior to the funeral on Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the funeral in the Bellefontaine Cemetery.
