George Edward Lear

George Edward Lear, 83, of rural West Mansfield, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at his residence.

He was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio on July 16, 1940, the son of the late George Frederick and Clara Dell (Sullivan) Lear.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Lear in 1961 and a brother-in-law, David Huffman.

On June 27, 1964, in St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bellefontaine, he married Sylvia Jean Hagar and she survives.  He is also survived by a daughter, Michele Lear Steggeman of Rushsylvania, a son, Richard Edward (Mary) Lear of Tennessee, two granddaughters, Anna Elizabeth and Miriam Jane Steggeman, two sisters, Carolyn (Paul) Taylor of Springfield, OH, Judy Huffman of East Liberty, OH, and several nieces and nephews.

George graduated from Rushsylvania High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force, where was in the S.A.C. (Strategic Air Command).  He worked as a foreman for H.B.D. Industries in Bellefontaine until his retirement in 1988.  He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bellefontaine, a former choir member and funeral mass server.  He loved vehicles and motorcycles and always kept his lawn and property meticulous.

Father Shawn Landenwitch will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bellefontaine.  Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 10 to 12Noon at Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main St., Bellefontaine.  Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Bellefontaine with military honors provided by the Logan County Veteran Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, in care of St. Patrick Catholic Church, 316 E. Patterson Avenue, Bellefontaine, Ohio 43311.
