Emblem

Henry Allen Kies, 93, of Bellefontaine, passed away Sunday evening, April 21, 2024, at Campbell Place.

Hank was born on April 20, 1931, to the late Ray Elmer Kies and Mary Gertrude (Weeks) Kies in Lima as the first caesarean birth at Lima Memorial Hospital.  He married Harriet Marie Roebuck in Belle Center on June 22, 1952, and she preceded him in death on August 6, 2010.

Hank and Harriet moved to Bellefontaine in 1955 and started their family.  He is survived by daughter Jennifer (George) Wilkins of Bellefontaine; sons Henry Allen “Hal” Kies Jr. of Columbus, and Jeffrey Scott Kies of Los Angeles, California; 4 grandchildren: Korie Marie (Kris) Keary of Troy, Michigan, Megan Leigh (Johnny) Reynolds of Memphis, Tennessee, Vanessa Wilkins of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Lili Kies of New York; and 4 great-grandchildren: Benjamin Keary, Mara Keary, Nolan Reynolds, and Cora Reynolds.

Hank was a graduate of Belle Center High School and played basketball for the Eagles.  Following graduation, he joined the US Navy and served during the Korean War.  After his honorable discharge, Hank returned to Logan County and sold furniture at Montgomery Ward, and then went to work for PK Lumber and West Liberty Lumber.  A woodworker since high school, he built any wood projects Harriet desired, and in retirement Hank started H&H Woodkrafters.

Hank was very community-minded and social.  He was a member of the Bellefontaine Jaycees, and Bellefontaine Lions Club.  Over the years, he grilled many hamburgers at the Logan County Fair for people to enjoy.  As a member of the Lions Club, Hank was a big supporter of Lions Eyeglasses recycling and the reading machine project to honor his Aunt Stella.  He was honored to be an Ohio District Governor and traveled to many Lions National Conventions.  Hank was also a member of the Bellefontaine United Methodist Church and loved the friendship and fellowship from the great people he met over the years.  A proud veteran, Hank was very grateful for the caring support of the Chalmers Wylie VA Clinic and Shelley Kneece and Scott Sedlak of the Logan County Veteran Service Office.

Hank’s family would like to thank the caregivers at Campbell Place Senior Living and Heartland Hospice for the excellent care and your patience.

Pastor Joe Ziraldo will officiate Hank’s memorial service on Friday, May 3, 2024, at 11am at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Bellefontaine, where visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.   Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Belle Center, with military honors provided by members of the Logan County Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bellefontaine First United Methodist Church, 201 N. Main St. Bellefontaine, OH 43311.
