James "Jim" Wayne Burnside

Jim Burnside, died Sunday, July 23,2023, at the McCall Hospice House after a brief illness.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, he is the son of the late Ben and Allyne Burnside. Jim graduated from Rushsylvania Local School in Logan County, OH, and Columbus Business University, OH.

Getting his career start at WOHP-Bellefontaine during high school, Jim had an outstanding broadcast career in the Upstate of South Carolina. He brought the news/talk format to SC in 1988; hiring Rush Limbaugh and Mike Gallagher to headline WFBC-AM whose call letters were changed to WORD-AM where he also served as Program Director and Station Manager.

Jim also helped launch WROQ-FM, WGTK-FM and WRTH-FM serving as award winning commercial writer and producer. Before moving to Greenville in 1970, his announcing career included stations in Columbus, Dayton, Lima, and Springfield.

He spent his army career as a music program host in Nuremberg-Germany (AFN-Europe) and Vietnam (AFVN-Saigon). During the latter assignment, he hosted a radio show called “The Dawn Buster” but was better known by the hourly morning “opener– Gooooood Morning Vietnam”, a tradition shared by several hosts through the years including Adrian Cronauer, portrayed in the GMV film starring Robin Williams.

Jim is survived by sons, Kent Steven Burnside (Jeni) of Franklin, TN, and Benjamin Richard Burnside (Leah) of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren; a sister, Judge Janet Burnside of Cleveland Heights, OH

The family will receive friends from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main Street in Bellefontaine, where Pastor Bryan Meadows will officiate a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Huntsville Cemetery in Huntsville, Ohio with military rites performed by the Logan County Veteran Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name as he wished to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, Memphis-TN. www.stjude.org.
