Marcus Raymond Hurley, 75, of Roswell, New Mexico passed away at 12:04 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at his home. He was born in Springfield, Ohio on September 24, 1947, to the late Ray and Susan (Jenkins) Hurley.

Marcus is survived by sisters: Amy (John) King of Huntsville and Jennifer (Ron) Hollon of Harrod; a brother, Peter Hurley of Belle Center; ten nieces and nephews; sixteen great-nieces and nephews; Carlos (Jocelyn Smith) Brady who Marcus saw as a son; and many close brothers in arms from the Vietnam War in which lifetime bonds were formed.

After graduating from Springfield South High School in 1965, Marcus entered the Army on October 19, 1965, and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, “C” Company of the 502 Airborne Infantry, where he served as the radio operator. He suffered multiple injuries and had to lie wounded in the field for four days before he could be airlifted. He spent over six months recovering in hospitals after being wounded.

A Vietnam Veteran, Marcus received a Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, National Defense Service Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge. He was a competitor in the Senior Olympics in badminton as well as winning three gold medals in shuffleboard. He was fluent in Spanish and quite skilled with the Native American Flute. Also, Marcus was officially adopted into the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Native Americans in Oklahoma.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2022, at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 321 N. Main Street in Bellefontaine, where Cap Willoby will lead a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Garwood Cemetery in Middleburg, Ohio.
