Margaret E. Smith

Margaret E. Smith, 84, of Urbana, Ohio passed away at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the Springfield Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio July 11, 1937, the daughter of the late Laurence and Mildred (Thayer) Kauffman.

On July 31, 1960, she married John D. Smith and he preceded her in death January 10, 1998. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon Kauffman and Donald Kauffman; three sisters-in-law, Marjorie Kauffman, Jayne Kauffman and Alta Kauffman and a niece, Dottie Norris.

She is survived by two brothers, Charles Kauffman of Urbana and David Kauffman of Cable, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Ruth Kauffman of Urbana; her nieces and nephews, Virginia (John) Cahoon, Kay (Bob) Grigsby, Richard "JuJu" Norris, Skip (Carla) Kauffman, Wendy (Rocky) Brenner, Linda (Fred) Kensler, Judy (John) Taylor, Ron (Karen) Kauffman, Kendra (Rick) Hunt, Larenda (Richard) Cordial, Lori (Norman) Kennedy, Jeff (Maria) Kauffman and Kris (Jeff) Hessenthaler; numerous great nieces and nephews.

Margaret was a 1955 graduate of Salem High School and worked for Plastic Research Co. in Urbana.  She attended the Urbana Church of Christ in Christian Union and was a member of the Urbana Free Methodist Church where she led a variety of children’s ministries.  She loved children and was a wonderful babysitter.  She enjoyed crafts, playing games, and doing puzzles.  Family was precious to her and family get-togethers brought her great joy.

Pastor David VanHoose will officiate a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 2, 2021, at the Fair View Cemetery in Mutual.

The family asks that you please be symptom-free, practice social distancing and consider wearing a face covering if you plan to attend.
